Mycotoxicosis Mold Toxicity

Condition description:

It is an illness resulting from toxic products produced by molds. Typically, a person is exposed to a wet building which may be home, workplace or school. It is also known by CIRS (Chronic inflammatory Response Syndrome), WBS (Wet Building Syndrome) and Black mold illness. It may be mistaken for CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)

Common symptoms:

Mycotoxins (toxins produced by molds) can affect any organ or multiple organ systems simultaneously. You may be aware of mold exposure by smelling musty or mildew odor or visible mold like seeing black mold at the place of exposure. The symptoms of mycotoxicosis can be acute or chronic, and symptoms depend upon the body organs affected. The respiratory and brain are the two most important organs involved. Common respiratory symptoms are:  Stuffy nose/Runny nose/Post-nasal drip, repeated sinus infections, repeated bronchial infections, wheezing/ asthma, difficulty in breathing, tightness in chest/ shortness of breath.

Brain symptoms include:

Headaches, depression, irritability, reduction in memory reduction in concentration,”cloudy” / ”foggy” thinking, mood swings, mental fatigue, confusion, poor comprehension, insomnia, decreased balance/unsteadiness

Other symptoms may include Fatigue/get tired easily, weight Gain, skin rashes, hives, muscle aches, joint pains, fibromyalgia

Underlying causes:

Exposure to molds and mycotoxins in a wet or water-damaged building. The exposure may or may not be obvious and requires testing for increased levels of molds at the suspected places; home, place of work or school.  Mycotoxins can be shown in the urine of the affected person or in dust from the place of exposure

Conventional treatment:

Symptomatic, depending on the symptoms. Sinus and respiratory infections may be treated with antibiotics, antihistamines, decongestants, asthma with inhalers, headaches with analgesics, depression with antidepressants etc.

EHC approach:

It depends upon the severity of illness and includes:

1. Identify the problem thru a comprehensive history and tests to demonstrate high mold exposure and mycotoxins

2. Mold remediation. If that is insufficient, remove the person from the place of exposure

3. Allergy testing and immunotherapy (allergy injections) when needed

4. Mycotoxins often affect the endocrine system. Identify endocrine problems like hypothyroidism (low thyroid), insulin resistance, female and male hormonal imbalances and treat them
