ADHD and ADD

Condition description:

There are two components to ADHD, which are attention deficit and hyperactivity.  Some children have purely ADD and no issues with hyperactivity, while others are very hyperactive and have no issues concerning attention deficit.  Then there are other children, which suffer from the most common type, both the attention deficit and hyperactivity.  When it is purely symptoms related to attention deficit problems, it is called ADD and when there is a combination of both attention deficit and hyperactivity it is called ADHD.  Symptoms consist of the inability to pay attention, concentrate, remember, think clearly or learn effectively.  Often it is associated with behavioral disturbances.

Underlying causes:

These include food sensitivities, chemical sensitivities, yeast overgrowth, deficiency of essential fatty acids, and mineral deficiencies.

Conventional treatment:

Consists of prescription medication such as methylphenidates (Ritalin). Medications such as dextroamphetamine, Pemoline, and Desipramine are also often prescribed.  Counseling and behavioral modifications are also recommended when appropriate.

EHC approach:

Avoid sugar, soft drinks, all preservatives, and additives. Identify food sensitivities and eliminate allergy triggering foods. Depending on the age of child, magnesium somewhere between 100 to 400mg may be indicated and calcium from 300mg to 800mg daily.

Story:

My son had a lot of problems when we first came in. I was so overwhelmed. We had a lot of testing completed and found out that he had many, many allergies. The doctor suggested shots to be administered 2x weekly for all of his problems (listed above). My son is 5 years old and does very well with receiving the shots 2x weekly. Before coming to Dr. Sultan, my son was on 3 different medications -- Zyrtec, Singular, and Focalin, an ADHD medication which was causing him to have tics (head jerking, eyes blinking, etc.). His child psychiatry doctor informed me that there were no other medications that he would take because of all the problems and side effects that he has had in the past. We tried several meds for the ADHD but nothing worked for him. now that we know about his allergies and he is being treated for them, I've seen a big difference in his behavior -- hyper and other problems. I can't believe what a difference I've seen in my son. I'm so happy for him and glad he is no longer on all of those medications. Instead of covering up the problems, we have treated the problems. Thank you. P.S.: I would recommend anyone with a child that has the same problems as my son to stick with Dr. Sultan and you will see an improvement in your child and their growth!

Story:

In May of 2004, my son Jack began treatment with Dr. Sultan. That was the best day of our entire family's life! Prior to this day, our child's life was completely out of control. Around the age of 2 our son began to experience severe hyperactivity, major temper tantrums, inability to follow directions, aggressiveness and an inability to sleep at night. As Jack grew older his sleep problems increased. He was now sleeping all afternoon. We were unable to wake him. He slept through school, allergy shots, even Disney World! Jack was diagnosed over the next 5 years as having Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity, Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder, Bi-Polar Disorder, and any other disorder known to man. After trying medications for all of these disorders to no avail, (Jack had severe reactions to most of the drugs), I began to go in a different direction. We had previously seen psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, pediatricians, allergists, sleep specialists, and a neurologist. No one was able to help our son. Dr. Sultan began treating Jack for severe food allergies and Candida. He also got treatment for seasonal allergies. Within 2 weeks, we began to see a different child. Jack woke up! Over the past 1-1/2 years, Jack has continued to improve, and he is currently controlling his symptoms through diet, supplements, and allergy injections. Jack is almost 9 years old and doing fantastic!

Story:

Andy began showing several symptoms at 18 months -- he was tired and lethargic at times. Other times, he seemed hyper. He was irritable and threw temper tantrums - he had an insatiable appetite and often hungry even after he just ate. After he had antibiotics for repeated infections and bronchitis he was even sicker. He had a cough that just would not leave. Diarrhea was a frequent problem to the point of malabsorption - much gas, bloating and stomach aches. His normal body temperature was often very low - sometimes in the 95 and 96 degree range. After treatment for Candida and removal of offending foods, his memory, energy level, and hyper behavior improved. He went on a real growth spurt - mentally and physically. The temper tantrums and food cravings stopped. He functions normally in his preschool classroom and his teachers find it difficult to believe that he was ever hyper or lethargic. He made it through spring last year without his usual series of colds and infections. Body temps are closer to normal and he's had only one cold in the last 6 months. We are a grateful family.

Dr. Sultan’s Comments:

Some of the common symptoms of allergy in infancy can be fatigue, hyperactivity, irritability and temper tantrums. One has to be aware of to suspect allergy if even an infant is not behaving as expected. Excessive hunger is also a symptom of allergy and this is how people eat excessively and become overweight. Other common allergy symptoms in infants are respiratory symptoms like repeated infections, bronchitis, wheezing and difficulty in breathing. His digestive symptoms like diarrhea, gas, bloating and stomachaches is part of yeast overgrowth which so often accompanies use of antibiotics for repeated respiratory infections. The turning point in this child was taking care of inhalant allergies, candida and food allergies. Mother had made a really important observation that his temperatures are low and along with fatigue it pointed towards low thyroid. Thyroid also plays an important role in turning him around.

Story:

After many years of battling low concentration and general disinterest of most anything for more than five minutes, I can say my condition has greatly improved. I went through several years of traditional Western medicine of mask the symptoms with a drug with ill effects. Taking Adderall for several years, I lost a lot of weight and was generally anxious and invested. Since balancing the chemicals in my body and eating a proper diet, the need for these drugs became non-existent. I can honestly say I am 100% better than I was some time ago. Thank you.

Dr. Sultan’s Comments:

ADD and ADHD are on the rise and more and more children are being drugged. They are suffering serious side effects from them including weight loss, memory loss and drug addiction. To learn more about causes of mental illness in both children and adults go on YouTube and search for Dr. Doris Rapp. She is an excellent Environmental physician who has documented tirelessly the relationship between environmental factors (what we eat, breath, touch and contact with) to mental symptoms and physical ailments. I strongly recommend you to watch those videos whether you have a physical or mental illness in your family or people you care about the most.
