Condition Description
A condition in which an individual is hypersensitive to small quantities of chemicals in the environment. Often these are quantities that are far smaller than what would affect most people. Sensitivity is usually obvious, with the individual being able to identify which chemicals bother him or her.
Common Symptoms
- Initially heightened sense of smell that reduces as exposure continues
- Symptoms are broad and may affect any organ but typically involve headaches, asthma, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, depression, hyperactivity chronic fatigue, or fibromyalgia
- Symptoms are often triggered by factors such as tobacco smoke, exhaust fumes, bleaches, fumes from furniture, carpets, asphalt, insect sprays, air fresheners, pesticides, varnishes, natural gas and gasoline products
Underlying Causes
- Repeated exposure to day-to-day chemicals and fumes (tobacco smoke, exhaust fumes, fumes from gas appliances, perfumes, fragrances and common household and workplace cleaning chemicals)
- Yeast overgrowth
- Heavy metal overload
- Nutritional deficiencies, especially mineral deficiencies
Traditional Approach
- Traditional medicine does not recognize chemical sensitivity. Those complaining of sensitivities are often told it is their imagination
EHC Approach
- Chemical avoidance in mild cases
- In severe cases, the home environment, particularly the bedroom, will need to be chemical-free
- Test for and treat any yeast overgrowth, heavy metal overload, or nutritional deficiencies

After exposure to chemicals at my work environment, I was bed ridden. In June of 2000, I made my first appointment with Dr. Sultan. He was able to give me a diagnosis of MCS which numerous other doctors had not been able to do. After much testing and treating with Vitamins and supplements, my health and everyday living has improved. Although my husband must shop and run errands, I am able to function in our "safe/clean" home. I live by the Marine motto - Adapt - Overcome - Improvise. |
Dr. Sultan’s Comments: |
most people do not realize that common chemicals in our environment cause chronic illness and for some it can be a debilitating illness. Common chemicals that we use or come in contact on daily basis and don’t think much about include fragrances, hair sprays, scented soaps, gasoline, Lysol, personal care products, gasoline, exhaust fumes, paints, varnishes etc. |

We came to see Dr. Sultan with our 10 years old son, Justin, who had experienced many different problems since birth. He has had pneumonia four times, being hospitalized each time from one week to ten days. He was very hyperactive and suffered with Candidiasis problems since age 18 months. His growth pattern was slow for his age and he had a very short attention span causing great difficulties in school. Dr. Sultan tested Justin for all sorts of allergies and thyroid problems. He started him on shots and therapy for the areas needed and in 14 months, we have had a dramatic change. Justin eats well, sleeps well, has achieved good grades in school and really feels good about himself and so do we.

I started my treatment with allergies with Dr. Sultan soon to be ten years ago in Collinsville in the fall of 1981. If you could have seen me that day ten years ago and see me now, you would not believe it is the same person.
After 10 years of being treated by you, Doctor, I am wondering what is left. Believe it or not, there is usually something else to be treated for. As an example, I am in the allergy testing room right now being tested for trees and grass. Someone once said: Life is one darn thing after another. I can say that for individuals with chronic allergy disease, 10 years is a long time but I can say today it was worth every office visit (except for the finances) (just kidding), every injection, every allergy testing to feel this good or I'm saying great. |

When I first arrived for treatment, I was in fairly bad shape. I had been treated by another allergy doctor and was getting worse.

Dr. Sultan’s Comments: |
There is a difference between traditional allergy approach and environmental approach. Traditional approach to allergies is looking at limited number of causes like dust, molds, pollens and animal dander etc. On the other hand, environmental approach calls for looking at the patient’s total environment which can be inhalants, foods and chemicals and internal environment which consist of various nutrients like vitamin minerals and gut biome. When you pay attention to the total picture it becomes easy to treat the problem and the results are far superior. |

It has been two years since I started treating myself using Dr. Sultan's Environmental Medicine approach. I believe my problems came about as a bad combination of long-term organic solvent exposures, peri-menopausal era of my life and an inherited tendency towards allergies. Over the past two years, Dr. Sultan's approach had helped me to eliminate a long-standing Candida syndrome and I no longer need any treatment to maintain no symptoms. I was diagnosed with very low thyroid function and natural supplementation and magnesium has reduced the terrible burning pain in all my muscles and AT LAST I'm moving on to a regular exercise program. This in combination with hormone supplementation has taken me to a new level of recovered wellbeing. Last which should have been first (except I'm so whatever) I finally have energy to take on my biggest hurdle - my food sensitivities! P.S.: I was able to reduce my cholesterol from 280+ to 190 using natural supplements! No side effects! |
Dr. Sultan’s Comments: |
Here the main causes were chemical sensitivity resulting from organic solvents, hormonal in the form of low female hormones and low thyroid, and allergy in the form of yeast overgrowth. People are often given a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. It is a garbage can diagnosis. Fibromyalgia means you hurt all over there is no injury or no cause to explain your pain and misery. That is not true. Most of fibromyalgia results from nutritional, hormonal deficiencies and allergy. Fix these causes and you say good-bye to aches and pain, chronic fatigue and other associated symptoms. |

Story: |
In 1969 I was living in Evanston, Illinois. At the beginning of that year, I suddenly began having seizures, urinating frequently every hour during the night, dragging one leg, suffering with double vision and hearing loss, as well as slurred speech. I would have episodes of panic and become disoriented and unable to think clearly. Up until that time, I went to the YWCA and swam several times a week, took long walks and was a schoolteacher, den mother to a group of cub scouts and active in church work. For many years I volunteered in hospitals and nursing homes. I had a busy and full life. It was difficult to accept this change in my physical wellbeing. My family doctor sent me to six different specialists. No one seemed to know what this was. About three months later, our doctor sent my 9 years old son, Dirk and I to his allergist in Chicago. We had been there two or three times and on that third trip, as he passed through the outer office, he heard me ask the receptionist for the phone number of a Chicago doctor. He stopped and asked, "Mrs., Large, are you in trouble?" "Yes, Dr. Randolph, I am." "If you can wait for an hour until some of these patients clear out, I will speak with you." Dr. Theron Randolph had a full schedule that day, but it was a trademark of his to never overlook anyone or any detail. My son and I waited. He finally called me into his office. He asked me 100 questions and I answered them as best I could. As I dictated my story, he typed every word. Finally, he turned around in his chair to face me and said, "I think I know what is wrong with you." A flood of relief washed over me. "You do?" "Yes, I believe you have a chemical allergy. You are probably sensitive to the hydrocarbons in your environment. I suspect they have damaged the myelin coating on your nervous system. I don't know how badly the damage is, but if it is totally gone, then you have M.S." "Multiple Sclerosis?" "Yes. At any rate, you are probably starting into it. Maybe we can halt the progress. I have found many of my patients with it get somewhat better when we change their living styles. You cannot change all of your environment, but you can alter some of it." "We have to be detectives. What were you doing back in January when these seizures first began?" "I'm an art teacher. I was teaching in a middle school. We do work with a lot of toxic materials. I was also building my little daughter a doll house and using spray varnishes, paints and Duco cement which is an airplane glue. I use it a lot in school when we do wooden sculptures. I'm building the dollhouse in my basement." "Is the area ventilated?" "No. It was January and so cold so I didn't open any windows." I entered the hospital. Fasted for one week, no food, only spring water to drink. The air was filtered, and no perfumes, hairsprays, or synthetic clothing was permitted. No one visiting me was allowed to wear anything like that nor even rubber soled shoes. He gave me one organic food each meal. We took our pulse 20 minutes, 40 minutes, and one hour later. We kept a notebook on our readings and our symptoms and reactions. If we tested ok on the organic food, later we were given the same food from a supermarket. It was surprising to see the organic food giving no reaction and then the supermarket food giving hives or rashes, etc. Amazing difference what food preservatives and additives and pesticides can do to one's system. He came in each day and answered questions and taught us how to care for ourselves. He said, "You need to take care of yourself in the future because many medical personnel have not been trained about these procedures. They will give you drugs, and those chemicals will make you more ill. We need to find the cause of your problem and then eliminate the cause. I felt like I was taking a college course. His information has been invaluable. A friend of mine, a nurse, was diagnosed as I. She elected to go with steroids and the regular route. Today she is dead while I run an international organization that cares for abandoned and handicapped children overseas. I live in India 6 months each year. I travel, work 18- 19 hours days very often and on my next birthday, I will be 69 years old. My extended family and friends joked and made fun of me. They thought the whole thing was ludicrous. He sent me home with potassium bicarb and sodium bicarbonate. Just one third teaspoon of one and 2 thirds teaspoon of the other with a glass of water would stop a reaction within minutes. It was amazing. We moved from Chicago and went to an Amish Mennonite county in Pennsylvania to live. There we built an electrically heated house and bought an electric stove. I cleaned my furniture with olive oil and rotated my foods. I never ever thought in 1970 that I would ever live a normal life. I did adjust my teaching lessons and made do without all the toxic materials, which was a challenging assignment. We grew a garden and canned and processed frozen foods for the winter. Living near neighbors who grew foods organically helped us immensely. We bought spring water and counted our blessings. On the day I talked with Dr. Randolph about my problems, I was praying and fasting and asking God to heal me and to allow me to raise my children. I asked him for 20 years. That was in 1969. Today it is 2003. In two more days, on April 29th I will celebrate the 34th anniversary of HOINA, the organization I founded. We have rescued thousands of kids and helped many adults to health and happiness. God is good and I am so glad that I found Theron Randolph. What a blessing he was to me and to many other patients. In 1992 we moved to St. Charles, Missouri. I contacted Dr. Randolph through his niece, Nancy Rogers. By then, he was in his 90's, still alert and doing well. I asked him to refer me to a doctor in the St. Louis area. His reply was...."There was a very bright young man who trained under me. His name is Dr. Tipu Sultan. He is the only one I can think of in your future area. I think he will be able to help you." There is a security in knowing that someone is nearby who was trained by Dr. Randolph, someone who will not just treat the symptoms but will search for the clues about the cause of my illness and then the cure. Someone who will help me to live a full and healthy lifestyle. |
Dr. Sultan’s Comments: |
This is a classic case of MS (Multiple Sclerosis) where neurologists will throw their towel and say “nothing other than symptomatic treatment we can offer.” Dr. Randolph Father of Environmental Medicine thought of the cause and found that solvents she was using in the arts class were damaging the myelin sheath of her brain neurons. The lesson to learn is that no matter how complex or unusual a disease is you got to look for environmental, nutritional and hormonal causes. |
