Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Condition Description

A group of symptoms and caused by compression of median nerve in the carpal tunnel

Common Symptoms

  • Tingling or pain may be severe enough to cause one to wake up in the middle of the night
  • Muscular atrophy of the hands in severe cases
  • Finger stiffness and sensitivity to cold

Underlying Causes

  • Obesity
  • Hypothyroidism

Traditional Approach

  • Diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide if there is significant edema
  • Corticosteroid injection in the carpal tunnel like Methylprenisolone Acetate (Depomedrol), Dexamethasone (Decadron), and hydrocortisone
  • Surgery (one-time or multiple may be required)

EHAC Approach

  • Test for and treat any hypothyroidism
  • If applicable, manage obesity and reduce weight
