Hay fever
Condition Description
A seasonal nasal allergy caused by pollens from trees, grasses and weeds. Hay fever may affect the bronchial area and trigger asthma. The pollen season generally lasts from spring through fall, but the timing for an individual’s reactions may vary depending on the pollen to which the individual is sensitive.
Common Symptoms
During pollen season:
- Sneezing
- Persistent or heavy runny nose
- Redness and/or swelling of eyes
- Persistent or severe itching of the nose
- Wheezing
Underlying Causes
- Pollen allergies
- Dust and/or mold allergies
Traditional Approach
- Antihistamines like Zyrtec, Claritin, Clarinex, Allegra, Chlorpheniramine or Benadryl
- Decongestants like Sudafed
- Nasal steroids like Flonase, Nasacort AQ, Nasarel, Nasonex, or Rhinocort
- Oral steroids like Prednisone or Prednisolone

- Test and treat any pollen allergies via desensitization
- Test and treat any dust and/or mold allergies via desensitization
