Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Condition Description

A group of symptoms and caused by compression of median nerve in the carpal tunnel

Common Symptoms

  • Numbness and tingling primarily in the first 3 fingers, aching and pain in the anterior wrist and forearm, and clumsiness or weakness of the hand
  • Tingling or pain may be severe enough to cause one to wake up in the middle of the night
  • One sign pain may be CTS is if symptoms are subside upon shaking the hand
  • Muscular atrophy of the hands in severe cases
  • Finger stiffness and sensitivity to cold

Underlying Causes

  • Occupations involving repetitive movements of the wrist
  • Obesity
  • Hypothyroidism

Traditional Approach

  • Wrist splints
  • Diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide if there is significant edema
  • Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain like Ibuprofen (Advil), and Celecoxib (Celebrex)
  • Corticosteroid injection in the carpal tunnel like Methylprenisolone Acetate (Depomedrol), Dexamethasone (Decadron), and hydrocortisone
  • Surgery (one-time or multiple may be required)

EHAC Approach

  • Most cases will respond to magnesium and vitamin B6 supplementation
  • Test for and treat any hypothyroidism
  • If applicable, manage obesity and reduce weight
