Sinus Condition
Brief
Definition of Condition:
Sinus troubles, sometimes
called sinusitis, is a common condition caused by the
swelling of sinus membranes. There are eight of these
membranes located behind the nose, cheeks and forehead. When
swelling occurs mucus inside the membrane cavity exerts
pressure on the inside of the sinus walls and the individual
feels pain on the entire forehead area and upper face. This
is a sinus headache.
Common Symptoms:
Symptoms of sinusitis include
pressure behind the eyes which cause a headache and stopped
up nose. The more the individual tries to blow or clear the
nose, the more pressure is exerted on the sinus membranes,
thus inflaming the condition even more. Sinusitis usually
affects those with other allergies such as chronic hay
fever; and sinusitis may also be caused by an infection of
the sinus membrane.
Treatment:
One temporary method of
relief is to drain the sinus membranes by applying a warm
cloth directly on the face or to breathe a warm mist or
steam. Over-the-counter drugs may also be temporarily
effective, but can often be addictive. Since sinusitis has
been found to be closely related to allergies, identifying
the allergens causing the sinus problem is an approach which
addresses the cause not the symptoms.
