Headaches
Brief Definition:
Headaches are commonplace in
today's fast paced society and are often associated with
stress. Minor headaches can be treated with aspirin.
However, a more serious, chronic type of headache is called
a migraine and can have a debilitating effect on an
individual's life. Migraine headaches affect one out of five
people, with women being the most susceptible.
Common Symptoms:
The symptoms of a migraine
headache include severe shooting pain, often behind the
eyes. A migraine can last from a few hours to several days.
The frequency of a migraine can vary just as much as their
duration. Migraines are caused by the swelling and
contracting of blood vessels in the brain. It is widely
believed that many migraines are triggered by an
individual's diet, such as a drop in blood sugar levels
after periods of fasting. Also, allergies to certain foods
or food additives, chemical fumes, molds, dust or other
airborne irritants are believed to be a major factor in
migraine headache incidents.
Treatment:
Traditionally, when a
migraine occurs, treatments have been directed at relieving
the pain. If environmental factors or allergies are believed
to be the cause, an individual may wish to keep a log of
food consumption or environmental conditions prior to a
migraine headache, then adjust behavior accordingly. A more
active approach is to consult a physician knowledgeable in
migraine headaches. Treatment should address the cause of
the illness and not just cover up the symptoms with
medication.
