Low Thyroid

Back

It is a very common hormonal disorder. Thyroid hormone is essential for turning the metabolic wheel in the body and heat production. Every organ, every tissue, and every cell is affected by this hormone. The deficiency can cause a wide range of medical problems. The most important symptoms include undue tiredness, low level of energy, low body temperature, feeling excessively cold, migraine headaches, depression, dry skin, infertility, menstrual cramps, heavy or irregular menstrual cycles, impotence, excessive weight gain, and inability to lose weight despite following strict diets, and many more. Low thyroid seems to be the root cause for hypertension and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), leading to heart attack. Dr. Broda Barnes, in his enlightening book, Solved the Riddle of Heart Attack, discusses this relationship. Simple tests can determine if it is a root cause for your problems. Another excellent book on the subject is "Hypothyroidism, The Unsuspected Disease", by Broda Barnes, M.D.

This is perhaps the most common disorder often missed in medicine because most physicians are making final decision based upon whether lab tests are within the normal range or not.  Unfortunately the normal range does not necessarily mean that those levels are optimal for you.  Determining that point can mean a night and day difference in your energy level and your ability to function normally and enjoy life.  This point is eloquently demonstrated in these patients stories:

Headaches, bloating, diarrhea, poor digestion, fatigue, cold, dry skin, skin rashes, depression, anxiety, rapid heart beat

Hyperactivity, pneumonia, slow growth pattern, short attention span, and difficulties in school.
